King laments the difficulty of beginning a history of Indian-White relations in North America without talking about Christopher Columbus. He also says that throughout the book he will be using “Indians” for Native Americans and “Whites” for white settlers.Ĭhapter 1 explores the concept of constructing a history and the impossibility of presenting a completely neutral account of the past. What was your relationship with your own hair like as a young girl? When I came up empty handed, I decided to create one myself and the result is Bedtime Bonnet! My mom and I love our bonnets and I wanted my daughter to feel the same way, so I looked for an age-appropriate resource to help normalize and celebrate this facet of Black culture, to no avail. ![]() This is understandable because none of the cartoon characters of color on her favorite shows wore bonnets or durags to bed.
